Here is the compiled list of Schools built, rehabilitated by Peter Ob, when he was the Governor of Anambra State.
List of Schools Built By Peter Obi As Governor
I’ll be highlighting some of the notable contributions Peter Obi made to the education sector during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State, particularly the numerous schools he built, renovated, and upgraded.
Peter Obi brought life to over 100 schools across Anambra State, many of which are still thriving and contributing to the state’s educational excellence. The achievements of Anambra students, both locally and internationally, continue to speak volumes.
Let’s start with Anambra State University – Igbariam Campus.
Although the university was originally established in 2000 as Anambra State University of Science and Technology with a single campus in Uli, it was under Peter Obi’s administration in 2006 that major expansion began.

Today, what is now known as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) operates three campuses:
- Uli Campus
- Igbariam Campus
- Awka Campus
Due to the limited accessibility of the Uli campus — originally situated on the site of Ekwenugo Okeke Polytechnic — the Obi administration began constructing a new campus in Igbariam on the former site of the College of Agriculture. In 2006, the government relocated the College of Agriculture to Mgbakwu, and through the Anambra State University Amendment Law No. ANHA/LAW/2006/01, the university was legally restructured and renamed Anambra State University.
By 2010, under the same administration, Amaku General Hospital in Awka was converted into the university’s College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital, establishing the third campus after an amendment law was passed by the state House of Assembly.
The Igbariam Campus — including the Faculty of Law and Management Sciences — was built entirely from scratch and commissioned by Peter Obi.
Let’s draw a quick parallel with Abia State University:
- The main campus in Uturu was built by Dee Sam Mbakwe.
- The medical school and teaching hospital in Aba were developed by Orji Uzor Kalu.
- The law faculty in Umuahia was built by Theodore Orji.
Would it make sense to disregard the contributions of Kalu and Orji simply because the main university structure existed before their time? Of course not.
In various sectors, we use different terms:
- In business: subsidiary
- In healthcare: annex
- In banking: branch
- In education: campus
Just because a bank has its headquarters in Abuja doesn’t mean a newly constructed branch in Lagos isn’t new. The same logic applies here. The Igbariam Campus was a fresh initiative built under Peter Obi — just like Dangote’s refinery is a new project, despite his existing cement empire.

Why I didn’t build new schools in Anambra as governor – Peter Obi opens up
He said that when he came to Anambra State, education was in shambles, schools were closed and the state was number 26 in the country but by the time he left, Anambra was number one in the state.
“I improved the quality, physical and mental well-being of the people, schools, had the basic things they needed and the people shone like stars and that was my manifesto.
“Building new schools when the old ones are moribund is just like building coastal lines when internal roads are impassable.”
